Austrian Resort Hotel Upgrades Theatre Lighting With ADJ Fixtures
Ten ADJ lighting fixtures have been installed in the onsite theatre at ROBINSON LANDSKRON, a lakeside resort hotel in Austria. Used for a wide variety of productions and presentations, the venue required a versatile lighting system, which was supplied by German entertainment technology specialists Event3. The theatre is now equipped with Encore Profile Pro WW ellipsoidals as well as Focus Flex L7 and Focus Spot 5Z automated luminaires.
Robinson Club GmbH is a market leader in Germany for premium resort hotels. It operates ‘all inclusive’ resorts throughout Europe as well as in Africa and Thailand. ROBINSON LANDSKRON is situated on the southern bank of Lake Ossiach in Austria close to the Gerlitzen Alp, which offers skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. Amongst a variety of amenities, the resort features an in-house theatre, which was built three years ago. Initially equipped with limited lighting technology, earlier this year the hotel’s management commissioned Andreas Zang and his company Event3 to design, procure and install a versatile lighting system to be used for a varied annual program of shows, lectures and meetings.
“As the theatre is used for a wide variety of different presentations – from classical plays to modern dance, musical productions to game shows – ‘all-rounder’ fixtures were clearly required,” explains Andreas. “Another key requirement was energy efficiency, therefore I selected only LED-powered units. After extensive research I specified three different models from ADJ’s catalog, each of which were ideal for the project. ADJ fixtures offer a very good cost-to-quality ratio, which makes them ideal for installations such as this where the budget is limited but relatively high quality fixtures are required as no technicians are on site to service the lamps regularly.”
To illuminate performers on the theatre’s stage, Andreas installed two of ADJ’s Encore Profile Pro WW LED-powered ellipsoidals. Featuring a potent 260W warm white LED engine that generates an output of up to 10,000 lumens with a 3,200K color temperature and impressive CRI of >97, this robust fixture offers the features and performance of a conventional ellipsoidal but with the power-saving and heat-reducing benefits of LED technology. Featuring a GOBO holder slot, four-blade framing shutter system and manual focus adjustment, this versatile fixture has an industry-standard design and can therefore be used with any existing ellipsoidal lenses and accessories that a theatre, production company or rental house may already own. However, ADJ’s complementary EP range of high-definition lenses are specifically designed for use with Encore Profile Pro fixtures and offer precision-engineered optics to deliver excellent sharpness and an even field. For the ROBINSON LANDSKRON theatre, Andreas opted for the new EP LENS Zoom 15-30 model, a manual zoom lens with a variable beam angle of between 15 and 30-degrees.
“The two Encore Profile Pro WW fixtures are capable of illuminating the entire stage,” comments Andreas. “However, I also wanted some moving head wash fixtures to light up specific areas, and to provide backlight. Originally, I chose the ADJ Focus Flex, but just before placing the order I switched to the Focus Flex L7, which was definitely a good decision. The lime LED chip allows for varying color temperatures of white light, which I can change with every scene if necessary, making sure performers with different skin tones are illuminated perfectly. Having individual control of each pixel is an added bonus, which I utilized for one of the shows I programmed to create a nice ‘eye candy’ effect.”
The Focus Flex L7 is a compact, quick and punchy LED-powered moving head luminaire featuring seven potent 40-watt RGBL (red, green, blue, lime) color mixing LEDs that are positioned behind a precision-engineered lens assembly. Designed to provide lighting designers with both flexibility and creativity, the fixture is capable of generating both wide washes and narrow beam effects. Its motorized zoom function allows the beam to be altered remotely between a wide 55-degree and narrow 6-degree field angle. The fixture’s extremely quick motor movement allows for the creation of stunning high-impact aerial effects, while 16-bit fine motor control ensures precise positioning.
Completing the line-up of ADJ fixtures specified by Andreas for the project was the ADJ Focus Spot 5Z. This compact yet feature-packed moving head spot fixture was specifically developed for use in theatres and other performance spaces. It is built around a potent 200W cool white LED engine, paired with high quality optics, which allows for sharp GOBO projections, in vibrant colors, that are equally suited to adding texture to a stage as they are to generating aerial effects. The fixture offers lighting designers a wealth of beam-shaping tools that include motorized focus and zoom, two prism effects (6-facet circular and 5-facet linear), two independent color wheels (including CTO, CTB and UV), a GOBO wheel with slots for six replaceable rotating GOBOs + open, and two frost filters (heavy and light) to create soft edged wash looks.
“Finally, I was looking for a multifunctional spot that could be used to create a wide variety of aerial effects and GOBO projections,” added Andreas. “ADJ’s Focus Spot 5Z proved to be the ideal solution, based on its output, feature set and price point. Ideally, I would have liked to specify a fixture with CMY color mixing for ultimate flexibility, but that wasn’t possible within the budget. However, across its two color wheels, the 5Z has enough options – including both rich primaries and subtle tones – to cover everything that will be required for current and future productions in the theatre.”
By combining three of ADJ’s best-selling fixture options, each bringing something different but essential into the mix, Andreas was able to deliver a lighting system that fully realized his clients’ brief of versatility and energy efficiency. The ROBINSON LANDSKRON’s theatre is now equipped with LED-powered lighting equipment that can be utilized effectively for the wide range of productions staged for the resort’s guests. As soon as it was installed, the new system was allowed to shine to its full potential by lighting a new stage show produced for the resort by creative agency n-tertainment concepts. ‘We Are From Austria’ (pictured) is an energetic celebration of Austrian music and culture which makes full use of the new ADJ fixtures’ ability to clearly illuminate performers on stage while simultaneously adding ambiance through vibrant color washes and engaging aerial effects.
